Why We Love Mirrored Signs...

Why We Love Mirrored Signs...

When Jamie and I first started our self-portrait studio, we knew we needed a sign that wasn’t just functional but also visually stunning. We looked at all the existing options including wooden frames, metal signs, chalkboard signs, and plastic signs but nothing seemed to capture exactly what we were looking for...

As a self-portrait photo studio, we wanted our sign to convey a sense of beauty and reflection. Enter the mirrored sign—a game changer for us and now for many other businesses that we have helped. Today, I’m diving into the world of mirrored signs, sharing the pros and cons, and revealing some fun facts that you might not know!

What Exactly is a Mirrored Sign?

Signs and Mirrors Mirrored Sign

Mirrored signs are exactly what they sound like: signs that incorporate mirrors or reflective surfaces. They can be entirely made of mirror or have mirrored elements, adding a twist to traditional signage.

Here’s why we believe Mirrored signs are so eye catching (and why people can't stop looking at them).

Pros of Mirrored Signs

  1. Attention-Grabbing:

    • Human Nature: Did you know that the average person checks themselves out in the mirror around 8 times a day? Mirrors are naturally attention-grabbing because frankly... people like to look at themselves! Studies have also shown that seeing one's reflection can boost mood and confidence, which could explain why people love mirrors!
    • Unique Aesthetic: Unlike conventional signs, mirrored signs offer a sleek, modern look that stands out. They reflect light and surroundings, creating a dynamic and visually appealing display that changes throughout the day.
  2. Versatility in Design:

    • Customization: Mirrored signs can be customized in countless ways. You can incorporate etching, engraving, or vinyl lettering to create a sign that perfectly represents your brand. Whether you want a minimalist design or something more elaborate, mirrors provide a versatile canvas.
    • Blend with Surroundings: A mirrored sign can reflect the colors and activity around it, making it a seamless part of its environment while still standing out. It’s a subtle yet powerful way to integrate your signage into your space.
  3. Perception of Quality:

    • Premium Feel: Mirrors often convey a sense of luxury and sophistication. A mirrored sign can elevate the perception of your business, making it seem more upscale and professional. This can be particularly beneficial for businesses like high-end retail stores, spas, and, of course, Pilates studios.
  4. Interactive Element:

    • Engagement: Mirrored signs invite interaction. People will stop to check their reflection, take selfies, and even engage with your sign on social media. This makes it a fun and engaging experience for your customers!

Cons of Mirrored Signs

We're obviously biased about our love for mirrored signs, but there are some reasons you shouldn't get a mirrored sign per below.

  1. Maintenance:

    • Cleaning: One of the biggest drawbacks of mirrored signs is that they require regular cleaning. Fingerprints, smudges, and dust can accumulate, making the sign look dirty and unkempt if not maintained. We recommend cleaning the sign at least once a week!
    • Fragility: General mirrors can be fragile and more prone to damage than other materials. Careful handling and installation are crucial to avoid cracks and breaks. At Signs and Mirrors, we use an HD mirror with special coating to increase it's strength and durability.
  2. Cost:

    • Initial Investment: Mirrored signs can be more expensive to produce compared to traditional signs. The materials and manufacturing processes involved are often pricier, so you’ll need to budget accordingly.
    • Replacement and Repair: If a mirrored sign gets damaged, repairs or replacements can also be costly. It’s essential to weigh these potential expenses against the benefits.

Making the Decision

If you’re considering a mirrored sign for your business, weigh the pros and cons carefully. Think about your location, the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to, and the impression you want to make on your customers. For a new clothing brand or yoga studio, a mirrored sign can perfectly align with the themes of self-reflection and boosting confidence, making it a compelling choice.

We believe mirrored signs are more than just reflective surfaces—they’re tools for engagement, perception, and unique branding. They draw people in, quite literally reflecting the best parts of their day back at them.
